Free EAN-8 barcode generator

The short retail barcode, for small packs. Enter 7 or 8 digits.

8 digits, or 7 and we add the check digit.

100% of standard size (26.73 mm). Retail allows 80–200%.

We draw the barcode; the number itself must be yours. Shops and Amazon check retail numbers against the GS1 register, so get them from GS1 and avoid resold “free UPC” numbers.

EAN-8 is the short retail barcode for packages too small for an EAN-13: it encodes an 8-digit product number in about 27 mm. Enter your number above; we add or check the check digit, size it to the standard and test the scan. PNG and JPG are free.

How to make an EAN-8 barcode

  1. Enter your 8-digit EAN-8, or 7 digits and we add the check digit.
  2. Keep the standard size if you can, scaling only as far as 80% for very small packs.
  3. Download a PNG at print resolution, or vector files for your printer (paid plan).

Tips for small packaging

  • Flat spots only. On a tube or a small bottle, run the bars around the curve (vertically) so they don’t bend out of the scanner’s view.
  • High contrast. Small barcodes have less room for error: black bars on white are safest.
  • Keep the margins. On tiny packs it’s tempting to crop them; scanners need them.

If your package can fit one, an EAN-13 is simpler to get. In the US and Canada, the compact alternative is UPC-E.

Questions people ask

When should I use EAN-8 instead of EAN-13?

Only when the package is too small for an EAN-13, such as cosmetics, sweets or small tubes. GS1 issues EAN-8 numbers separately and only for products that truly can’t fit an EAN-13.

Can I shorten my EAN-13 into an EAN-8?

No. They’re different numbers. You need an EAN-8 number assigned by GS1.

How big is an EAN-8?

At 100% it’s about 26.7 mm wide including margins, with bars about 18 mm tall. You can scale it from 80% to 200%.
