A UPC-A barcode encodes the 12-digit Universal Product Code that shop tills scan in the US and Canada. Paste your UPC above: we check the check digit, size the barcode to the retail standard and read it back before you download. PNG and JPG are free.
How to make a UPC barcode
- Enter your 12-digit UPC, or the first 11 digits and we add the check digit.
- Keep the size at 100% (about 37 mm wide) unless your packaging needs it smaller or larger; retail allows 80% to 200%.
- Download a PNG at print resolution, or an SVG, PDF or EPS for your designer or printer (paid plan).
Printing tips for UPC barcodes
- Dark bars on a light background. Black on white is safest. Red bars don’t scan: many scanners use red light.
- Keep the margins. The blank space each side is part of the barcode.
- Don’t shorten the bars unless your retailer allows it; shorter bars are harder to scan at an angle.
- Test a printed proof with a scanner or a phone barcode app before a big print run.
The packaging guide covers finishes, curved surfaces and file formats that apply to barcodes too.
For small packages, the compressed UPC-E fits in less space. For outer cartons, use ITF-14.
