Free vs paid QR code generators: what’s worth paying for?

What you should never pay for, and what you might.

Last updated

A free QR code generator is enough for most people, as long as the codes keep working when you stop paying, or never start. Static codes are free everywhere and work forever. What differs is dynamic codes, the ones you can edit and track: some services make them free, others only give them during a trial and deactivate them after. Check that first, then decide whether anything else is worth paying for.

What a free generator should give you

  • Static codes that work forever, with no sign-up and no watermark.
  • Dynamic codes that don’t depend on a trial. If a dynamic code stops when a trial ends, every print with it stops too.
  • No scan limits on codes you’ve printed.
  • Design basics: colours, a logo and a frame, and a check that the code still scans.
  • Downloads good enough to print, such as a PNG at 300 dpi at the size you need.

What can be worth paying for

  • Vector files (SVG, PDF, EPS) for designers and print shops, and very large prints.
  • Advanced features on many codes: redirect rules by device or country, passwords, split traffic, date and scan limits, custom short links.
  • Bulk creation, an API and team seats, if you make hundreds of codes or work in a team.
  • Certifications and contracts your security or legal team requires.

If you don’t need any of these, you don’t need to pay.

Check before you print

  1. What happens to my dynamic codes if I stop paying, or never start?
  2. Is there a scan limit, per month or per code?
  3. Is there a watermark or forced branding on downloads or redirect pages?
  4. Can I use the codes commercially?
  5. Can I export my codes and data?

Our comparisons with QR Code Generator PRO, QR TIGER, QRFY, Uniqode and QRCode Monkey answer these questions for each, with sources, including where they’re the better choice.

How QRfinity does it

Static and dynamic codes, design, scan analytics and PNG and JPG downloads are free, with no scan limit and no watermark, and codes never expire. Paid plans, from $5 a month, add vector files, more contact card templates and advanced features on more codes. When a plan ends, codes and their short links keep working. See pricing.

Questions people ask

Do free QR codes stop working?

A static code never stops on its own: it holds its content directly. Dynamic codes depend on the service behind them, and some services deactivate them when a free trial or a plan ends. Read what happens before you print.

Is a free QR code generator safe for business use?

It can be. Look for codes that keep working without a subscription, no watermark, clear terms on commercial use, and a company that tells you what happens to your codes if plans or the service change.

What does QRfinity charge for?

Static and dynamic codes, design, scan analytics and PNG and JPG downloads are free, and codes never expire. Paid plans add print-ready SVG, PDF and EPS files, more contact card templates and advanced features on more codes. Not paying never breaks a code.

Should I pay for scan analytics?

Basic analytics, such as total and unique scans by day, device and country, are free on QRfinity. Pay for analytics only if you need something more specific, and check what a free account already includes.
