QR code scanner: read a code from an image or your camera

See what a code holds before you open it. It never leaves your browser.

Add a photo or screenshot of a QR code

Drop an image here, paste a screenshot, or use your camera. The image is read in your browser and never uploaded.

What the scanner can read

It reads every kind of QR code our generator makes, and the common formats other generators use:

  • Links, including short links and QR service redirects, which it labels so you know what you’re about to open
  • Wi-Fi network names, passwords and security type
  • Contact cards (vCard): name, phone numbers, email, address and notes
  • Email, SMS and phone codes, with the prepared message
  • WhatsApp chats, map locations and calendar events
  • Plain text, shown exactly as stored

“Exactly what’s in the code” shows the raw content, character for character, so nothing is hidden or reinterpreted.

Check a link before you open it

QR codes are a common way to slip someone a bad link, because you can’t read the address by looking at the code. The scanner shows you the full address first. Short links and QR service redirects hide the final address, so you can ask us to check where they lead, and whether the page still works, without opening it yourself.

Make your own copy that never expires

Found a code you want to reuse, like your café’s Wi-Fi or a contact card? “Open in the generator” fills in the same content. Codes made on QRfinity never expire, have no watermark and download free as PNG or JPG.

If a code you rely on stopped working, use the QR code checker to find out why.

Questions people ask

Is the image uploaded anywhere?

No. The code is read in your browser, on your device, with the same decoder our generator uses to test every code it makes. The image never reaches our servers. Only if you press “Check if the link still works” do we receive the link, to open it and report back, and we don’t keep it.

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Yes. Paste a screenshot anywhere on the page (Ctrl+V, or Cmd+V on a Mac), drop the image file on the box, or choose it from your files. On a phone, choose a photo from your library.

Why won’t it read my photo?

The most common reasons are blur, glare, a code that is cut off at the edge, or a very small code in a large photo. Take the photo straight on, fill most of the frame with the code, and avoid reflections. Light codes on dark backgrounds are read too.

Is it safe to open the link in a QR code?

Look before you open it. The scanner shows the full address first and warns you about short links, which hide where they lead, and unencrypted http:// links. If you don’t recognise the website, don’t enter passwords or payment details on it.

Can I edit a QR code I scanned?

You can make a new one with the same content: choose “Open in the generator” and the fields are filled in for you. If the original was printed, the printed code itself can’t change unless it was a dynamic code and you control the account that made it.
