A password-protected QR code asks for a password before it opens anything. On QRfinity you can add one to any dynamic code, whether it opens a link or a contact card, and change or remove it at any time without reprinting. It’s free on one code, and plans from $5 a month cover more.

How does a password-protected QR code work?

The printed code holds a short link, such as qrfinity.link/ followed by a few characters. When someone scans it:

  1. Their phone opens a simple page on our short domain asking for the password.
  2. They type it and tap the button.
  3. If it’s right, they go straight to your destination, or see your contact card. If not, they’re asked again.

The password is asked on every scan. Nothing is stored on the phone, so there are no cookies, no app and no account for the scanner.

What can I use it for?

  • Staff and member pages. Rotas, training videos, price lists or a members’ area that shouldn’t be public, behind a code on the staff room wall.
  • Event extras. Slides, recordings or photo galleries for people who attended, printed on the badge or the last slide.
  • Private contact details. A contact card with your mobile number for clients, not for anyone who photographs your sign.
  • Early access. A sale or launch page shared with a list before it opens to everyone.

A password keeps casual scanners out. It isn’t the right tool for medical records, banking or anything that needs proper accounts and audit trails. Protect those on the destination site itself.

How do I make one?

  1. Create a dynamic code with the generator on this page and save it to your free account.
  2. Open the code in your dashboard and find Password protection.
  3. Type a password of 4 to 64 characters and save. Scans ask for it within about a minute.

You can change the password whenever you like, for example after a staff member leaves, and the printed code keeps working.

What do I see in analytics?

Scans are counted when someone opens the password page, so you see every scan, including people who didn’t know the password. Devices, countries and cities work as they do for any dynamic code, with up to 2 years of history. We don’t store IP addresses, and we never store the passwords people type.

What does it cost?

Password protection is one of our advanced features, alongside custom short links, redirect rules, split traffic and date and scan limits. Every free account can use advanced features on 1 code. A code counts once however many it uses, so one code can have a password, a custom short link and redirect rules for the price of one. Plans cover 10 codes for $5 a month, 100 for $20 or every code for $50, and your first plan is free for 30 days. See pricing.

If a plan ends, the password stays on. Protected codes never become public on their own.

Questions people ask

Can I add a password to a QR code I already printed?

Yes, if it’s a QRfinity dynamic code. Open the code in your dashboard and set a password; scans ask for it within about a minute. The printed code doesn’t change. A static code can’t have a password, because it opens its content without going through any server.

What happens if I forget the password?

Set a new one from your dashboard. We store only a scrambled copy (a salted hash), so nobody, including us, can tell you the old password.

Do people have to type the password every time?

Yes. Nothing is saved on the phone: no cookies and no login. That keeps a shared or lost phone from keeping access, and it’s why we don’t need a cookie banner on our short links.

Can someone guess the password?

Wrong guesses are slowed down: after 10 tries in a minute from the same visitor, the page asks them to wait. Pick something longer than a word or a year, and share it only with the people who should get in.

Does the password stay on if I stop paying for a plan?

Yes. Password protection never switches off by itself, so a protected code never becomes public without you choosing it. You can remove the password at any time.

Can I protect a contact card?

Yes. A protected contact card shows the password page first, then the card. The Save contact button works without asking again.
