Free UPC-E barcode generator

The compressed UPC for small packs. Enter 6, 7 or 8 digits.

6 digits, 7 with the number system (0 or 1), or 8 with the check digit.

100% of standard size (22.11 mm). Retail allows 80–200%.

We draw the barcode; the number itself must be yours. Shops and Amazon check retail numbers against the GS1 register, so get them from GS1 and avoid resold “free UPC” numbers.

UPC-E is a compact barcode for small packages sold in the US and Canada: it writes certain 12-digit UPCs in 6 digits, about 22 mm wide. Enter your UPC-E number above; we check it against the full UPC-A it stands for and test the scan before you download.

How to make a UPC-E barcode

  1. Enter the 6 UPC-E digits, or 7 with the number system, or 8 with the check digit.
  2. Check the preview: the number system prints on the left and the check digit on the right.
  3. Download a PNG at print resolution, or vector files for your printer (paid plan).

How UPC-E relates to UPC-A

A scanner reading a UPC-E sends the full 12-digit UPC-A to the till, so prices and stock records only need the UPC-A. For example, UPC-E 04252614 stands for UPC-A 042100005264. That’s why the check digit is calculated from the full number.

For packages with room, a full UPC-A is simpler. Outside North America, the small-pack barcode is EAN-8.

Questions people ask

What is UPC-E?

A compressed UPC-A for small packages. Certain UPC-A numbers with runs of zeros can be written in 6 digits; the scanner expands them back to the full 12-digit UPC.

Can any UPC be turned into UPC-E?

No. Only UPC-A numbers with the right pattern of zeros compress. If your UPC doesn’t, use UPC-A, or ask GS1 about numbers suitable for small packages.

What do I enter?

The 6 digits, 7 if you include the number system (0 or 1) in front, or 8 with the check digit at the end. We work out the check digit from the full UPC-A it stands for.
