How to make a QR code

Four steps, under a minute, nothing to sign up for.

Last updated

To make a QR code, choose what it should open (a link, Wi-Fi, a contact card and so on), fill in the details, adjust the colours and logo if you like, check it scans, and download it. On QRfinity that takes under a minute, needs no sign-up for a static code, and the code never expires.

Step 1: Choose what the code opens

Open the generator and pick a type:

  • Link: a website, menu, form or video. The most common choice.
  • Wi-Fi: joins a network without typing the password.
  • Contact: saves your name, phone and email to the phone’s contacts.
  • Email, SMS, Phone, WhatsApp: starts a message or call.
  • Location, Event: opens a map or adds an event to the calendar.
  • App store, Social, Payment: opens an app, a profile or a payment page.

Then fill in the details. The code updates as you type.

Step 2: Static or dynamic?

  • Static codes hold the content directly. They work forever with nothing in between, but can’t be changed after printing.
  • Dynamic codes hold a short link you control. You can change where they go and see how many people scan, with a free account.

If you’re printing something you can’t easily reprint, choose dynamic. More in static vs dynamic QR codes.

Step 3: Make it yours

Under Make it yours, choose a pattern, colours, a logo and a frame with your own words, such as “Scan for the menu”. Keep the code dark on a light background; the design guide explains why.

Step 4: Check it scans

Every design is checked as you make it: the badge under the preview says Scans or Won’t scan, with the reason and the smallest size to print. Then scan it with your own phone camera.

Step 5: Download

Set the print width, then download:

  • PNG for print at 300 dpi at that width, and for screens.
  • JPG for places that don’t take PNG.
  • SVG, PDF or EPS with a paid plan, for designers and print shops.

For a dynamic code, save it to your account first; it then appears in your dashboard with its scan counts.

Before you print

  • Print one copy at the real size and scan it with two phones.
  • Check what it opens one last time: a typo in a static code can’t be fixed.
  • Keep a clear margin around the code, and see what size to print it.

Questions people ask

Is it really free to make a QR code?

On QRfinity, yes: static and dynamic codes, design, scan analytics and PNG and JPG downloads are free, with no watermark and no scan limit, and codes never expire. Paid plans add print-ready SVG, PDF and EPS files and advanced features on more codes.

Do I need an account?

Not for a static code: it’s made in your browser and downloads straight away. A dynamic code, which you can edit and track, needs a free account so only you can change it.

Can I make a QR code on my phone?

Yes. The generator works in any phone browser. Download the PNG to your photos, or share it straight to a message or a print shop.

How long does a QR code last?

A static code works for as long as what it holds is valid. Our dynamic codes never expire either, whether or not you ever pay us. See do QR codes expire for codes from other services.

Can I put my logo in the middle?

Yes. Under Logo, upload your own. The generator raises the error correction so the code still scans, and warns you if the logo is too big.
